How to Lace Up a Hicking Boot

If you are a hiker, you understand the discomforts you face when you wear a pair of improperly-laced hiking boots. A few tips help you quickly learn how to lace up a hiking boot to ensure your feet are comfortable and free of pain all day long.

  1. First: Learning about eyelets

Observe that a standard pair of hiking boots features two distinct sets of eyelets. The open eyelets are the ones you see along the fronts of the boots. The quick-release eyelets are the ones you see on the boot sections that support the inner ankles.

  2. Second: Lacing the open eyelets

Lace the open eyelets along the boot fronts by threading the laces through each eyelet. Tighten the laces. Make sure you allow a bit of slack to ensure the boots are not too snug. Make a tight, overhand loop at each of the last open eyelets.

  3. Third: Lacing the quick-release eyelets

Lace each pair of quick-release eyelets in the same manner. Make a tight, overhand loop at each of these eyelets. Repeat this pattern with each pair of quick-release eyelets until you are at the last set of eyelets. Pull the laces tight enough to secure the feet. Make sure there is enough foot room in the boots to allow for proper blood circulation. Your feet need to have some wiggle room inside the boots.

  4. Fourth: Tying the knot

Hold onto each end of the loops that hang from the last of the quick-release eyelets. Tie these ends together the same way you tie any other pair of shoes. Your boots are now tied securely, and your feet have enough room to allow for natural swelling that occurs during hiking.
