How to Waterproof Your Hiking Boots

The most important aspect of caring for a good pair of hiking boots is keeping them waterproofed. Water proofing is not a one-time process; you must renew the waterproofing on a regular basis just as you would perform regular maintenance on your car. With proper care, a good pair of hiking boots can last for years.
First: Waterproofing new boots
If you have just purchased a new pair of hiking boots, read the care instructions that came with them. Frequently, boots are waterproofed by the factory and do not require any treatment before use. However, you should break in your boots before you take them out in the field. This makes it easier on your feet, and allows you to identify and soften stiff areas of the leather with conditioner in order to prevent cracks.
Second: Checking whether you need to reapply waterproofing
After every hike, carefully clean and dry your boots. When the boots are clean, you can judge if the boots need a reapplication of waterproofing by dropping a bit of water onto the surface of each boot. If the water does not bead up and roll off, then repeat the waterproofing application.
Third: Reapplying waterproofing
The waterproofing process is simple. First, dampen the boot with water. This allows the waterproofing to penetrate the material. Next, work the waterproofing agent into the boot as directed, and set the boots aside to dry. Your can set your boots in the sun, but never attempt to speed up the process with a hair dryer, as this can create cracks. When the boots look dry, repeat the process as before. After the second coat is applied and allowed to dry, your boots are ready for the trail.
